The ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT) organised an exhibition titled “From Waste to Worth” in Kochi, showcasing innovative products developed from marine litter, discarded fishing nets, plastic waste and abandoned boat materials.
Held under the institute's Swachhata Action Plan, the exhibition highlighted how marine waste can be transformed into useful, environmentally sustainable and potentially marketable products.
Turning Marine Waste into Valuable Resources
One of the major attractions was the conversion of discarded marine plastics into recycled plastic pellets and cement-based composites, which have potential applications in construction and other commercial sectors.
The exhibition also featured decorative items, ornaments, flower pots, paving tiles, artistic structures and injection-moulded products manufactured using discarded fishing gear and boat materials.
Creative displays included a jellyfish model made from abandoned fishing nets and ropes, a miniature boat crafted from discarded fishing gear, and models of fish, sea turtles and other marine organisms.
Products developed from discarded fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) boat materials were also showcased, demonstrating opportunities for recycling and sustainable reuse.
Promoting Environmental Awareness and Livelihood Opportunities
According to ICAR-CIFT, the initiative aims to raise awareness about marine pollution while encouraging fisherwomen, young people and students to acquire skills in converting fishing-related waste into useful products.
Students from MES Asmabi College, Padinjare Vemballur, visited the exhibition and explored the innovative recycling techniques.
Experts Highlight the Impact of Marine Pollution
Dr Manju Lekshmi N, Senior Scientist in the Fishing Technology Division at ICAR-CIFT, delivered a technical session on the environmental impact of marine litter and measures to reduce pollution.
ICAR-CIFT Director Dr George Ninan, Fishing Technology Division Head Dr M P Ramesan, and Dr V Geethalakshmi, Principal Scientist and Nodal Officer of the Swachhata Action Plan, addressed the inaugural gathering.
The exhibition highlighted the potential of marine waste recycling to support environmental conservation, skill development and new livelihood opportunities for coastal communities.
