The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, has withdrawn a book authored by jailed activist and former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid from its library following objections raised on social media.

The institute stated that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to prevent potential misunderstandings or unrest on campus.

Social Media Post Sparks Controversy

The controversy began after a user on social media platform X questioned the inclusion of Khalid's book, Fractured Communities: Adivasi Histories and the Politics of Power, among the library's newly acquired publications.

The post highlighted that IISER Pune is a central government-funded science research institution, raising questions about the book's inclusion in its collection.

Following the online objection, the institute's administration reviewed the matter and decided to withdraw the publication.

Institute Explains Its Decision

In an official statement issued on Monday, IISER Pune clarified that its library regularly acquires books based on recommendations from faculty members and other institute members, under the supervision of a designated library committee.

According to the institute, more than 50 books covering various academic disciplines are generally added to its collection every month.

The administration stated that the book was withdrawn as a precaution to avoid any misunderstanding or unrest and that further steps would be examined.

What Is the Book About?

Khalid's book is based on his doctoral research and explores approximately two centuries of political and social developments in the Singhbhum region of present-day Jharkhand.

The research focuses on colonial administration, state formation, Indigenous communities and the historical relationship between tribal societies and political authority, particularly among the Ho community.

Background of Umar Khalid's Case

Umar Khalid, a former JNU student activist, was arrested in September 2020 in connection with the February 2020 Delhi riots.

He was booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in a case involving allegations of a larger conspiracy behind the violence.

The riots claimed 53 lives and left more than 700 people injured.

Khalid has faced allegations of involvement in planning the violence. These remain allegations, and his arrest or prosecution should not be presented as proof of guilt.

Questions Over Academic Freedom

The withdrawal also raises broader questions about academic freedom, access to scholarly publications and the role of educational institutions in responding to public objections.

While IISER Pune has described its decision as precautionary, the episode highlights the challenge institutions face in balancing campus concerns with the principles of academic inquiry and intellectual independence.

The institute has indicated that it will examine whether any further action is necessary.
